Buy gem mines, build shops and receive visits from nobles in Splendor!
Players travel back in time to the Renaissance and take on the role of gem merchants trying to earn the most prestige. They do so by running gem businesses, collecting rare stones and building up supply and trade routes. The theme is abstractly conveyed through the 3 decks of cards which depict the various options the merchants can take.
Splendor’s true value really shines through in its elegant mechanics and how they emphasise the idea of building a gem business. On your turn, you may collect gems, play cards or reserve cards. Collecting cards into your tableau will cost you gems, but also provide discounts towards future purchases. This accurately reflects how you have to pay the costs of setting up a shop and reaping the profits it provides. Gameplay is fast and tactical, with a necessity to observe and block your opponents while ensuring that your own gem procuring engine is running efficiently.
With its amazingly streamlined mechanics, Splendor is a light strategy game perfect to teach to players who are new to the hobby of boardgaming!
